Extreme Growth Of Vancouver, WA 98685 image
The city of Vancouver, Washington, has experienced phenomenal growth over the past twenty years. In this time, the city has become home to 300 high-tech companies, including IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Intel. In the 1990s, the city underwent annexation to expand its borders by 30 square miles and add almost 100,000 new residents. Despite its relatively small population, Vancouver has seen a remarkable increase in the number of companies and jobs.

The city's skyline features the impressive Grouse Mountain. The north peak, formerly used as a fire lookout, offers unobstructed views of the city and surrounding area. You can also enjoy coffee on the rooftop of the Vancouver Public Library building. The building, which was constructed in 1909, also houses the Clark County Historical Society Museum. The museum is an excellent resource for research and exhibits. Those interested in the area's history will love the city's museums.

History buffs will be fascinated by the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. Founded by the British Hudson's Bay Company in 1825 as a fur trading post, the fort has four different sites that highlight the rich cultural history of the Pacific Northwest. Fort Vancouver also offers guided tours of the historical buildings and displays. The park's modern visitors' center features a film describing the area's history and offers a bookstore. The museum's art gallery features works by local American Indian artists.

A historical perspective is important when planning your trip to Vancouver. Located in the northwest corner of Washington, Vancouver has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The city's many museums will allow you to relive this glorious history. Visit Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, the Farmers Market, the Waterfront Renaissance Trail, the historic Fort, and the historic Vancouver Land Bridge. The city has many other places to visit, but it's worth spending some time in the city itself.

Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, Esther Short Park is a five-acre gem. Anchored by the historic Salmon Run Bell Tower, the park also contains a Glockenspiel diorama telling the story of the Chinook Indians. Its rose garden and playground are beautiful. The Slocum House offers events and concerts in an outdoor setting. While dining, you can try out a new cuisine or sample the local fare.

Besides the city's vibrant downtown area, Vancouver Washington boasts an impressive public park system. The largest park is the 190-acre Vancouver Lake Park, which stretches 2.5 miles along the shoreline of the lake. It offers a great location for canoeing, kayaking, and windsurfing. The park also features playgrounds, a beach, and wetlands. You can even take your dog on a walk or jog along a trail around the lakeside.

Aside from the waterfront park, the city also has a few attractions you should not miss. The Waterfront Renaissance Trail, a paved pathway connecting downtown Vancouver and Wintler Park, is five miles long and filled with scenic views. This quaint park also includes restaurants, shops, and historic attractions. For those looking for history, Fort Vancouver, a National Historic Site, is located on the Columbia River. This military site offers spectacular views of the city, and is home to the first transpolar flight.
